Indoor Gardening Tips

Even if you don’t have a lot of time or a huge yard space, it’s still possible to grow a garden full of fresh vegetables or herbs right inside your home. Almost all vegetables can be successfully grown indoors and one of the many benefits is the ability to protect your plants from pests and insects.

START EARLY:

  • Make a plan of which types of plants you want to grow before you head to buy your supplies.
  • Buy early in the season to find exactly the right plants for your indoor garden needs.

CHOOSING PLANTS:

  • Since you will have limited space, choose your most favorite plants for your indoor garden.
  • Pick out a mix of vegetables, flowers, and herbs in differing sizes, colors, and shapes. If you decide to transplant some plants outside, this will give you a variety.
  • Be sure to check what each plant requires for sunlight – you’ll want to group those plants together that have similar needs.

GARDENING CONTAINERS:

  • The larger the container the better. Bigger pots allow for deeper root system and will retain water longer.
  • There are many types of containers available – from recycled, ceramic, clay, and glass.
  • Make sure that all your containers have drainage holes in the bottom.

WATERING:

  • Giving your plants the right amount of water is a priority for your indoor garden.
  • Don’t allow pots to stand in water continuously- this could damage the roots to your plants.
  • Most plants thrive in high humidity. Add moisture to air, if necessary.
  • Use a spray bottle to keep plants lightly hydrated.

LIGHTING:

  • If possible, place plants in a very sunny, south-facing window for best lighting.
  • Rotate your plants occasionally,  so that all sides receive sunlight.
  • Help potted plants thrive by giving them afternoon shade.

ADDITIONAL TIPS:

  • Read as much as you can from other gardeners for additional gardening tips.
  • Ask your friends who garden for additional tips. Most gardeners are more than happy to share knowledge and tips about indoor gardening with others. Make your indoor garden a project for the whole family. Allow children to pick out their own seeds and give them the task of nurturing their special plant.
